Poor husbands in India have set up rent-a-wife schemes, leasing their partners for up to £100 a month to richer men as the shortage of brides has reached crisis proportions.
The increasing scarcity of young women graphically shows the impact of the outlawed but widespread practice of aborting female foetuses because families want boys, not girls.
Atta Prajapati, a farm worker who lives in Gujarat state, leases out his wife Laxmi to a wealthy landowner for £100 a month - around ten times his salary.
Laxmi is expected to live with the man, look after him and his house and, of course, provide sex....

It's tragic..:( Sometimes in life..it's difficult to understand when we are not in their shoes. I guess nobody in the right frame of mind will want to do such thing unless there's really no other choice!
Back in Dubai...I know a friend (from India) or should I say an acquaintance who is an IT professional...good remuneration. But he's pimping (he admitted himself) part-time! And get this right....he provides guys (his circle of friends...IT professionals, engineers..etc from India and the Philippines) for male expats/locals..mainly staying around Jumeirah. For a mere US$200...the one hour service includes a massage and some desserts...not cookies for sure! The pimp takes a 40% cut for each assignment. Why is he doing it? Hard to say...money is never enuff...more so if it is easy money! By the way...he's married. "What's that?" "No, I don't think his wife is for rent!"

San Nakji asked in his last post what we prefer to be reincarned in. I think, if I must come back on earth, it's so difficult to be a woman. I studied, worked as an architect, then because my husband is hard working and I wanted to have three children I'm now a housewife.
Men have no problem, despite they have a family...
But at the same time I was so happy to wear my babies, that none of males can do that...

I sure don't take being an American woman for granted. I feel very lucky. We have alot more freedom than women in other countries. Yet in America women are pimped out, abused, trapped in abusive marriages etc. It's sad.
My husband works with alot of Indians. They will do absolutely anything to save or make money, or make themselves look good. They have absolutely no scruples (most of them, there are a couple of respectable ones he's met. Shouldn't stereotype!).

The problem here is whether the woman has a choice. The problem with the so called oldest profession is that most women who do it are doing it just to survive. It ain't right, as my good friend Chris Rock says!

The farmer did it to make both ends meet.
However what would you say about high class pimping? Some wives do it just for a change in routine and split the cash with her hubby. Hubby has a good job but doesnt mind haring wife cuz he's also going around for a chang too. Strange world indeed.
I still remember the Oprah show where some white Christian families who look absolutely normal talked about their lively swinging episodes. Oprah asked about their kids. They said it didn't matter.

Here in Muscat, I heard about an Indian guy that was whoring HIMSELF to local women. His customers were purely upper-class sex-deprived married or divorced Omani ladies. (he refused singles and other nationalities). He used to be a driver for some family but found this to be more lucrative.
He got busted when a husband suspected that his wife has "learnt" new techniques elsewhere.

it's prostitution, plain and simple. and once again the man is pimping. i'm sure the wife has little say in what the money is used for...nothing new.
i guess this all goes back to the cyclical nature of things...how if you abort girls, you 'll have no wives...seems like common sense.
the other thing is that i'm sure the AIDS rate will increase. positive. and if said "wife" gets pregnant who will take care of the baby? will there be indian versions of jerry sprnger complete with DNA tests...
where will the husbands draw the line? if they'll pimp out their wives, you better believe they'll pimp out their daughters. before you know it

its sad how all of you have generalized it as "there", "them" or "among Indians."
please note that this isnt a rampant practice. this is just a strange thing practiced in one part of the country (Hence the need to report it in a newspaper). It IS NOT a custom or part of any of the several cultures that exist in the country in any way whatsoever.
and junebee, yes it is a matter of keeping up with the jones like black feline said. and yes, i agree stereotypes are not correct. but i hope u realize that you are creating a stereotype by saying what you just said. And that too, an incorrect stereotype (and criticism).

anonymous...i don't think we are picking on any particular group or race...we are looking at the issue as per se...i have no doubt it's also practise in other parts of the world..hope u can look at it in perspective...ultimately..i believe more has to be done via legislation to improve the status of women in general...
