Not the LBD

This year...UK is celebrating the 80th anniversary of Coco Chanel's first little black dress. The iconic Audrey Hepburn in the classic: Brerakfast at Tiffany's set the trend for the LBD.
The other day, on the way to the washroom...I saw this Iranian guy working away on a black abaya..stitch by stitch...bead by bead. He was kind enuff to explain the process. Some intricate designs will take weeks and even months. His fingers stiffen....backache...teary eyes...etc It is definitely an art....under appreciated because he's getting peanuts every month...a mere 450 dhm! I don't know how much they are charging for a piece...definitely not cheap.
Think about it...the LBD is just a piece of simple black dress...nothing fanciful... but you probably be paying thousands for a branded piece! And the designer will be laughing all the way to the bank...What a contrast!

I'm too cheap to pay for designer names! It's Wal-Mart and Target for me!

Pretty soon people will complain that such hand-beading (as shown in the picture) is a dying art. Well, no wonder if the artisan can't make a living from it.

I can't believe people pay so much for these things. It's sad too that this guy is getting so little when he is doing all the work!

What is even more amazing is the fashion shows you see on tv. The outfits are always so awful but yet these desginers still make bundles of money! I don't get it...

It's amazing to see a man doing such a meticulous work
you know we cannot even imagine that in france, however, my father told me that in vietnam, men embroider and not women
I even have a beautiful tapestry coming from China and showing a beautiful wader
I must show that once on my blog it may be interresting

I liked to do such a work, I have no more time now, in fact it's true that this work needs much much much time
I can undertand how it is so expensive. Why who want to have it don't embroider it himself ?

Hello Black Feline, You must be some sort of Spiritual relative of mine. I just stumbled upon your blog and was checking it out. VERY NICE. I saw this bit on the poor craftsman whose passion for excellence is demonstrated by the damage he puts his body through in the act of his creation. It makes me feel very sad that such a wonderful man can be exploited by those who do NOT create, who instead merely make a living exploiting those who do. When I hear about this I just wish someone close to him could take the time to give that man what he needs to put his dresses online, allow his work to be accessed by the millions of the people in the world who would cherish his work and reward him FOR it. Why is it that the best examples of humanity are consistantly found at the bottom of the heap? There is a lesson there somewhere I think.

Great Blog you have here, and thanks for your work. Through your eyes I have been able to visit someplace far from my home in Austin, Texas.

Ferocious Feline
